Full service = new car?

March 31, 2009, added by Shane

Mystic Dave the technology director oversaw the full service of Shane’s car. It was sounding ‘in need’ so in addition the oil filter and oil, the plugs were replaced with uprated NGK Platinum items. The air filter and micro filter were replaced. Finally the fuel filter was replaced. The latter due to potential bits that may have entered the fuel system from the bodyshop work completed earlier in the year.
It’s like a new car now. Exhaust and engine sound…

DICE Silverline iPod Kit

March 9, 2009, added by Shane

We have added an article about installing the DICE Electronics iPod integration kit. This took us about a day to complete because of where we wanted the iPod. The result is quite effective and I am very pleased that I finally got round to buying it! We have photos and a short video! Check out the main article here, or the photos here.
If you are interested in this kit, you can find and buy the kits from the following…

Data analysis: Le Mans 2008

February 24, 2009, added by Shane

Before the next track day arrives I thought it would be wise to provide a very quick and dirty analysis of the data I collected on the Performance box. For those of you that may have seen some content here, things have changed, you will find the overview as it stands now in the ‘Track & Travel’ articles… here!
We have not managed to get all the data in yet. Grant has found his files and so we will…

Le Mans update

August 17, 2008, added by Shane

It has been a couple of weeks since the track day at Le Mans and it is time for a quick update. As usual we had a great day and a great party afterwards. The weather was interesting as it started out with lots of rain and then ended up bright and grippy! Interestingly, whilst it was grippy, I managed to spin off the track and ding my car. The only other problem we encountered was some minor slippage from…

Brake system

July 25, 2008, added by Shane

The front discs on my car were badly worn. They were rusted badly and had large ridges around the outside.  To ensure that the car was as safe as possible – and that I had the latest braking point as possible on the track – I ordered new set.
Grant’s car has racing pads, Goodridge braided hoses and Dot 5.1 fluid. The performance I noticed in his car last year at Le Mans was superb; the lack of brake fade…

Dot 5.1 brake fluid returns!

July 13, 2008, added by Grant

In a previous post I mentioned that the dealer did not have dot 5.1 fluid and I could not get some down to them, so they put in regular brake fluid at the inspection II service. With the track day around the corner, it was time to get some dot 5.1 fluid back in.

A misfire followed by a different sound on the highway in France.

July 8, 2008, added by Grant

I left the office one sunny afternoon to shoot home for lunch, but when I started the car all did not bode well. It felt like the car was firing on 3 cylinders and it would not rev over 2000rpm. The obligatory pop of the bonnet ensued, but what was I expecting to find under there! A couple of phone calls later and the flat bed was booked. I then went to have another look and the car started fine…

Rear diff and exhaust

July 7, 2008, added by Shane

After picking up the car, nearly every corner that I drove around caused the rear LSD (Limited Slip Differential) to make a sound like a walrus mating. If you want the full story about this rather large can of worms and why I don’t think a local “non-BMW” garage did the work they claimed to have done – read the full article and check out the photos.

Some new tyres

June 23, 2008, added by Shane

It is safe to say that the front tyres on my car were not safe! When I picked it up, they were well beyond the fine line of safety. In fact, as you can probably see from the photo on the left, the treads had vanished and were through to the canvas. Due to the uncommon size of the tyres (225/40/19), the local tyre fitter had nothing that would fit, therefore I had the opportunity to order the tyres of…
